NYU School of Law’s Space Moot Court Team advanced to and competed in the World Championship in Sydney, Australia after qualifying by winning the North American Regional Competition in Washington, D.C. in the Spring.
A couple of highlights from the final round:
- The victory was North America’s first in the competition since 2015 (and the first in NYU history)
- The final round was judged by 3 active ICJ justices: Judge Peter Tomka (Chief Justice, Slovakia), Judge Bogdan-Lucian Aurescu (Romania), and Judge Dire Tladi (South Africa)
- The team defeated the University of Luxembourg in the final round and Singapore Management University (the reigning world champs) in the semi-finals
- The team included: Elyse Cox (JD ’27), Jacqueline Stark (LLM ’25), and Denis McGrath (JD ’27), with invaluable support from our faculty sponsors/coaches (Prof. Benedict Kingsbury & Yirong Sun), as well as our student coaches/support team (Kaiwen Pan (LLM ’25), Anna Kohlasch (JD ’27), and Shelby Hobohm (JD ’27))
- The competition is currently in its 34th consecutive year and is considered one of the world’s “Grand Slam” Moot competition
