As part of ABILA’s International Law Weekend 2026, this panel will explore the emergence of alternative international orders as dominant states retreat from multilateral commitments. These emerging arrangements include regional economic and security frameworks, private and hybrid regulatory regimes, and voluntary commitment platforms.
The discussion will examine how these evolving forms of governance are reshaping international law and challenging established institutional structures. Drawing on developments in trade, economic security, and outer space, the panel will consider whether alternative orders represent meaningful institutional transformation or reproduce existing hierarchies of legal authority, resources, and power.
The discussion will be moderated by Angelina Fisher, Director of Policy & Practice, Global Law & Tech at the Guarini Institute for Global Legal Studies, NYU School of Law.
Speakers:
- Harlan Grant Cohen, Professor of Law, Fordham School of Law
- Sannoy Das, Assistant Professor of Law, Vanderbilt Law School
- MJ Durkee, William G. Hammond Professor of Law, Washington University in St. Louis
- Michal Saliternik, Associate Professor, Netanya Academic College School of Law
The panel forms part of International Law Weekend 2026, organised by the American Branch of the International Law Association (ABILA).
